Who needs a Digital SLR camera?

I DO!  Well, ok, I don’t NEED a Digital SLR camera, but I really, really want one!  My friends with those kind of cameras take the most beautiful pictures.  Their blogs are just full of gorgeous shots of their kids, their crafts and even their cookies and it makes me jealous!  However, since we have a digital “point and shoot” 8 megapixel camera that mostly works, it just doesn’t seem practical to spend the kind of money they want for those fancy cameras.

So, I’ve been doing some googling and experimenting with the settings we do have on our camera and with the GIMP Image Manipulation software.  The GIMP is a very powerful, yet free piece of software that anyone can download here.  I haven’t even begun to scratch the surface of all that GIMP can do, but I’m having fun with it!  I haven’t been able to create anything quite as beautiful as a true SLR photo, but I’m getting closer.  And for the price, I think I can live with that.  🙂  See the photos below for an example of how you can use GIMP to blur the background of an image.

P.S.  These pictures are of Noah on the night of his Preschool Christmas Program.  He was the cutest thing standing on the stage singing about Baby Jesus.  His class sang 3 songs and he gave us a “thumbs up” after each one.  Priceless!

And here is the image I edited in GIMP!
