When we first moved into our house, most of the neighborhood was under construction. Even though our house was only a few blocks behind the school, it was unclear if there would be a direct way for us to walk to school through the neighborhood once it was finished. At the time, it wasn’t a big deal to me. I figured we’d be driving to school every day for convenience sake, so we chose to build our house on a lot that would be close to the neighborhood pool, and didn’t think another thing about walking to school.
Fast forward a few years and we have only driven to school once (due to torrential rains!) since school started last month! Thanks to a sidewalk poured by the neighborhood and a walking trail built by the school PTA, our entire walk is now paved! Â The walks to and from school are some of my favorite parts of the day. I cherish the conversations we share, some of them serious and most of them silly, and the way we always seem to stop along the way to pick up a rock or watch a ladybug cross the street. I love that instead of hurrying out the door or frantically fighting traffic, we get to start our day with a leisurely stroll. We are going to do our best to walk to and from school every day even when it gets cold and blustery because every day we walk we are making memories – memories I wouldn’t trade for anything in the world and memories I hope will be with the boys for a long, long time.
